'13th' Screening

What:

On Sunday, November 6th, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm in the Rodin Rooftop Lounge, the Jewish Cultural Studies Program and Rodin United are working in conjunction with graduate students at the Graduate School of Education, the Law School, and the School of Social Policy and Practice to screen Ava Duvernay's new documentary, '13th'. Following the film screening, interested individuals are encouraged to participate in an educational discussion on the connections between mass incarceration and racial oppression in the United States.

For centuries, scapegoating and the villainization of the Jewish people has threatened their existence, and, as such, 'repairing the world' or 'tikkun loam' has been an important mission within the Jewish tradition. Moreover, Jewish lawyers, activists, and students have played instrumental roles in the promotion of civil rights for all people and, as such, are important stakeholders in the effort to end mass incarceration -- one of this country's most shameful civil rights scourges.

Rodin United's mission to bring Rodin residents together to explore intersectionality, to celebrate diversity, and to engage with many perspectives and approaches to solving complex social problems squarely aligns with the call of this film -- to recognize that the history of our country is laden with systemic racism that will require significant efforts on multiple fronts to resolve. We believe that we are at a turning point in our country's history where students and leaders are recognizing the harms of mass incarceration and our community deserves the opportunity to be well-informed and to take part in the conversation.

We hope you join us on the 6th to view and discuss '13th'.
